Story

Spatzendreck is a living legend. In 1951 a little Sperling “Spatz” flew to South Africa, landed at Delheim and started to make wine. Spatzendreck was conjured out of one of Spatz’ early winemaking efforrts, about which a “lady” was heard to remark, “it tastes like sh..”. Awarded the worst label of the world” award in 1971 by decanter Magazine depicting a cheeky sparrow doing his best to enable this famous Wine. It has been refined over time to a wine suitable for the gods. A true collector’s wine from the home of Delheim.

Tasting Notes

Pair the naturally sweet Spatzendreck wine with the aria "Mein Herr Marquis" from Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus. The aria’s playful and flirtatious character matches the wine’s vibrant aromas of citrus blossom, quince, and honey, along with its lively tropical fruit flavors. Just as the aria brings a smile with its witty charm, the wine’s sweetness and balanced acidity make for a delightful and cheerful pairing.

Food Pairing

Serve as apéritifs and also pair with rich pâtés like foie gras and strong blue cheeses such as Roquefort.

Wine Makers Note

Small batches are whole bunch pressed and the juice is left to settle overnight. After settling the juice is put into 225L French oak barrels for fermentation. Fermentation is stopped at the right alcohol and sugar levels.
