Story

Neil Ellis is a renowned This flagship wine has won gold medals at the Decanter awards, the International Wine Challenge (IWC), Double Golds at Veritas Awards and one of the most outstanding reviews on winemag.co.za. It stands for a balance between elegance and power.

In 1989 Neil Ellis took a calculated leap of faith into the wine-negociant arena, buying and vinifying grapes from elected vineyards and marketing these hand-reared wines under his own label. Mindful that exceptional terroir and assiduous vineyard cultivation form the bedrock of great wine, Neil forged long-term supply-partnerships with top grape-growers in premium areas.

Tasting Notes

Pair this intense, full-bodied wine with the aria “O du, mein holder Abendstern” from Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. The opera’s dramatic and powerful themes reflect the strength and depth of this wine. The aria’s rich, evocative music complements the wine’s robust aromas of black currants, cedar wood, and spices, while its profound, lingering notes align with the wine’s strong tannins and extremely long finish. The dramatic intensity of the aria enhances the experience of the wine's complex flavours and pronounced minerality.

Food Pairing

For a robust and flavourful combination, consider pairing your ribeye on the bone, aged cheese, and dark chocolate with a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Makers Note

Grapes were destemmed and underwent a whole berry fermentation. The grapes underwent a series of pump overs until dry. Malolactic fermentation was completed in French oak barrels. This wine spent 18 months in French oak barrels.
