Story

The name Kanonkop is derived from a hillock (kop) on the Simonsberg mountain above the wine estate from where, during the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon (kanon) was fired to announce the arrival of sailing ships entering Table Bay.

Kanonkop owes its international reputation to the passionate cellar master Beyers Truter who is considered the "King of Pinotage" in South Africa. With great hard work and remarkable meticulousness, his successor Abrie Beeslaar is continuing this success story of Kanonkop's first-class red wines on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain.

Tasting Notes

Pair this wine, with its juicy dark fruit and savoury character, with the aria "Dido's Lament" from Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. The deep, autumnal notes of dark fruit and the subtle hint of sweetness mirror the emotional intensity and bittersweet longing in the aria. Just as the wine balances fruit and savoury flavours, the aria beautifully contrasts sorrow with a haunting, delicate melody, making it a perfect pairing.

Food Pairing

This versatile wine pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, from classic pizza and pasta to hearty barbequed meats and venison stew. Its rich flavours also complement beef or lamb burgers, while its subtle complexity enhances the bold, vibrant spices of Thai cuisine, making it a perfect match.

Wine Makers Note

Fermentation took place in open top concrete fermenters at 280C. The floating skins were punched down mechanically, every 2 hours during fermentation. The juice was drawn off the skins after 3 days. After malolactic fermentation the wine was matured for 12 months in 2nd and 3rd fill 225L French Nevers oak barrels.
