Vergelegen was founded by Willem Adriaan van der Stel , who replaced his father as the Cape governor in 1699.
Critics such as Tim Atkin and Robert Parker regularly give the winery the highest ratings. The word "vergelegen" means "far away". However, the isolated location on fertile soil offers ideal growing conditions. Vergelegen winery is also committed to animal welfare and sustainability.

The Vergelegen Merlot Reserve’s deep plum colour, with aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and hints of chocolate, pairs beautifully with the aria "Vesti la giubba" from Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. The rich, emotional depth of this aria complements the wine's luscious, ripe fruit aromas, delicate wood notes, and harmonious balance between fresh acidity and lingering complexity.
