Story
“Some days I am more wolf than woman and I am still learning how to stop apologizing for my wild” is the inspiration behind the name Wolf & Women.
Top-quality grapes, minimal intervention and sustainability are at the forefront of Wolf & Woman’s ethos. The winemaker, Jolandie Fouché, dedicates her experience and passion for wine to Wolf & Women, which reflects in the multiple accolades her wines have received including a 95 Pinotage 2021 Tim Atkin MW South African 2022 Special Report amongst others.
“Once the grapes are ready, we step in as interpreters of their natural song”.
Tasting Notes
Pair with Donizetti’s “Regnava nel silenzio” from Lucia di Lammermoor. The bright red cherries and plum on the nose resonate with the passionate intensity of Lucia's emotions. The wine’s vivid fruit pairs with the aria's strong quality and intense anguish in Lucia’s character. The chalky structure and balanced acidity mirror the underlying tension and fragility of the aria, while the hints of dried herbs and spice complement the dramatic depth and complexity of Lucia’s tragic story. It’s a powerful, nuanced pairing.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops. The wine's fruitiness complements the savory richness of the lamb, while the dried herb notes in both the wine and the dish enhance the flavors. Add a side of roasted root vegetables with a hint of rosemary and garlic to bring out the wine’s complexity and structure, creating a well-rounded and harmonious pairing
Wine Makers Note
Only 5000 bottles made.
WOLF & WOMAN is a blend from two Paardeberg vineyards on granite soil. The 90% old-vine grapes (planted in 1973) and 10% younger vines at 350m altitude were hand-picked in the morning, chilled for 24 hours, and bunch-sorted.
Fermentation began after a 3-day cold soak in open-top fermenters (15% whole bunch, the rest destemmed). A single daily punch-down guided natural fermentation. After 7 days on skins post-fermentation, the wine was lightly pressed and aged in old 300L and 500L barrels for 8 months. It was then racked into concrete for 2 more months before bottling.
