Story
Couple, Miranda and Martin Smith’s boutique Franschhoek winery honours the region’s French Huguenot heritage, with Chardonnay as their favourite varietal. The Atlas Swift collection spans five regions and nine wines, showcasing the Cape’s finest terroirs. Rooted in Old World winemaking traditions, their approach embraces precision and minimal intervention, crafting elegant wines that speak of place and passion.
Tasting Notes
This delicate, straw coloured wine finds its perfect match in “Au bord de l’eau” by Fauré. The chromatic melody of the aria, with its fluid, ever-shifting harmonies, mirrors the wine’s layered complexity—from floral notes of orange blossom and jasmine to the richness of vanilla, almond, and desiccated coconut. Not to mention white stone fruit and a touch of lemon zest on the finish. Just as the song’s delicate phrasing glides effortlessly, the wine’s bright acidity and velvety texture create a refined, lingering experience, making each sip as evocative as Fauré’s serene, floating melody.
Food Pairing
Pair this delicate, aromatic wine with buttery lobster tail or almond-crusted sole. The wine’s floral and citrus notes enhance the dish’s subtle flavours, whilst its velvety texture complements the richness of the seafood, creating a refined pairing.
Wine Maker’s Note
The 2022 vintage was a late and challenging season, with high disease pressure from persistent rain and a hot January causing sunburn and leaf discoloration.
Vinification: Hand-harvested grapes were de-stemmed and fermented in French oak barrels (20% new, the rest 2nd and 3rd fill) with native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in barrel. The wine matured on the lees for 12 months with weekly stirring, followed by 6 months of bottle aging before release.
